Where Plans Break
A plan almost never fails everywhere at once, it gives out at one specific place, and in my experience there are only seven of them.
On this page
Almost nobody fails at the start. The start is the easy part. You know the feeling: the notebook is open, the plan is written, and for about eleven days you are a different man.
Then it stops. And when people describe how it stopped, they usually describe it as one big collapse. It rarely is.
A plan gives out at one specific place, and it is nearly always the same place for the same person.
Once you know which place is yours, you stop fixing everything and start fixing one thing. That is the whole value of knowing.
the seven places
Direction
Breaks when you chase goals you borrowed from someone else, so they never feel worth the effort.
Holds when you can say in one sentence where this period of your life is going, and it sounds like you.
Focus
Breaks when you carry five priorities at once, so none of them move.
Holds when you have one priority, and you know what you are saying no to.
Milestone
Breaks when the goal sits so far away that nothing has to happen this month.
Holds when you have one milestone with a date on it, and you could prove you reached it.
Design
Breaks when the plan lives in your head while your calendar and your surroundings still serve the old life.
Holds when your calendar and your space make the right action the easy one.
Evidence
Breaks when you judge progress by how you feel, so one bad day convinces you that nothing works.
Holds when a daily record of what you promised shows you the pattern, and you adjust from facts instead of from mood.
Recovery
Breaks when one missed day becomes a missed week, and then a quiet restart in January.
Holds when you have a rule for missing, so a slip costs you a day and the plan survives it.
Independence
Breaks when progress lasts exactly as long as someone is holding you accountable, and fades when they stop.
Holds when you can direct, design, record and recover on your own.
they come in that order for a reason
Read the list again and you will notice it is a sequence, not a menu.
Direction has to be yours before focus means anything, because focusing on a borrowed goal only gets you to the wrong place faster. A milestone without focus is a wish with a date. Design without a milestone has nothing to build around. Evidence without design records a life you did not arrange. Recovery without evidence has nothing to recover to.
So the place where yours breaks is usually the first one in that order you never actually settled.
That is also why fixing the last thing that went wrong so rarely works. The missed week was real, but it was the symptom. If you borrowed the goal in the first place, no recovery rule in the world will keep you at it.
which one is yours
Most people know within a minute. You read the seven and one of them is uncomfortable to read.
Take that one, and give it the next twelve weeks. Not all seven. One. The others get easier on their own more often than you would expect, because they were waiting on it.
